The Emory University cross country teams traveled to Jackson, Mississippi to compete in the NCAA Division III South Regional Championship. Both the men and women finished second overall at the event, with 13 different Eagles earning All-Region Status including all seven men at the competition. The race was run at the Choctaw Running Trails course.
The women came in with a team score of 49, 11 points behind the winners, Washington & Lee. Meanwhile, Lynchburg narrowly bested Emory, posting a 51 to the Eagles' 56.
The women got things started at the 6k distance, with six different runners earning All-Region acclaim. It was once again graduate student
Brigid Hanley in front for Emory, finishing second overall with a time of 21:42.5. Senior
Liesl Scherrer was right on Hanley's heels, coming in fifth overall with a time of 21:58.4. Also finishing in the top-10 was senior
Madison Tiaffay who clocked in at 22:13.9 and in ninth place.
A pair of freshmen were next up for the Eagles with
Ashlyn Pallotta coming in 16
th with a time of 22:32.6 and
Davis Johnson coming in 17
th with a time of 22:33.4. Rounding out All-Region performances for the women was sophomore
Cameron Gupta who came in 31
st with a time of 23:18.4.
Sophomore
Elizabeth Csikai was the final Eagle to cross for the women, coming in 44
th with a time of 23:55.2.
The men had a very strong day, with all seven runners finishing inside of the top-35 to earn All-Region honors.
Running at the 8k distance, graduate students
Scott Masterson and
Spencer Watry were the top-two finishers for the men's team. Masterson came in seventh overall with a time of 25:03.9 and Watry close behind in eighth with a time of 25:08.5. Senior
Marcus Cheema also posted a top-10 finish, logging a time of 25:13.0 in 10
th place.
A cavalry of Eagles came in shortly after, with sophomores
Olin Gilster and
Kirin Karver and graduate student
Tristan Olpin coming in 15
th through 17
th. Gilster clocked in at 25:19.9, Karver in 25:21.8, and Olpin in 25:22.3. Freshman
Ryan Van de Berghe was the final All-Region performer, coming in 26
th with a time of 26:04.3.
The Eagles will now wait to see if they will be selected to the NCAA National Championship field. Should they be selected, they'll head to Terra Haute, Indiana next Saturday, November 23
rd to compete. The selections will be released on Sunday, November 17
th on NCAA.com.
