The Emory University men's cross country team continued its string of NCAA Championship appearances during the 2024 season, earning a berth to its 11th straight national meet while posting the fifth consecutive top 25 finish under Head Coach Linh Nguyen.
The Eagles were led by a balanced core of performances throughout the season with the team turning in six top four finishes as well as one team win across the eight meets.
After coming in fourth place at the KSU Stan Stims Opener, highlighted by freshman Ryan Van de Berghe's excellent debut, Emory picked up the team win at the Queens City Invitational with Spencer Watry leading the charge. Watry led the Emory contingent in Charlotte with a top 10 individual finish while the outing was the first of three meets on the season where Watry was the Eagles' top performer.
The Eagles added top 10 showings over their next three meets before gearing up for the postseason. Nicholas Krol paced the Eagles to a fourth place finish at the Georgia Tech Invitational while Tristan Olpin was the top performer at the Paul Short Run, helping the team finish seventh in the stacked Division III field. Two weeks later, Watry collected his second top individual effort as he ran a season-best 24:45 to finish 13th to lead the Emory to a bronze finish at the Upstate Invitational.
Watry along with classmate Scott Masterson shined over the final three meets for the Eagles as the duo were consistently among the team's top finishes during the postseason.
At the UAA Championships, Watry registered a 15th place finish while Masterson (18th) and Kirin Karver(20th) added additional top finishes as Emory finished fourth as a unit.
At regionals, seven different Eagles claimed All-Region status as the Eagles finished second in the 22-team field and secured an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. Masterson, Watry and Marcus Cheema raced to top 10 finishes with Masterson heading the charge with his time of 25:03.8.
Masterson once again was a strong competitor for the Eagles in the final race of the year as he was 65th overall to lead Emory to a 24th place finish at the national meet. It marked the fifth straight season the Eagles finished inside the top 25 at the NCAA Championships.
In addition to their performance on the trails, seven Eagles were recognized on the USTFCCCA Academic All-America list as well as 19 team members were honored on the UAA All-Academic team for the second straight season. Furthermore, Watry and Masterson earned national recognition with their selections to the College Sports Communicators' Academic All-America teams and Watry was the latest Eagle to receive the prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship.
