The fourth-ranked Emory University Women's Tennis team capped off the 2013 Fab 7 Tournament with an upset victory over top-ranked Johns Hopkins University, as the Eagles defeated the Blue Jays 6-3 at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Sunday afternoon.
Emory finished the Fab 7 Tournament with a 2-1 record to improve to 8-3 overall this season. Johns Hopkins, 0-2 over the weekend, now stands at 4-2 for the year.
The Eagles claimed a key edge after doubles play, winning two of the three matches. Emory claimed the first doubles point in the second match, when senior Jordan Wylie and freshman Madison Gordon defeated Shannon Herndon and Sydney Lehman 8-4. After junior Brenna Kelly and freshman Emma Taylor were edged 9-7 by Abby Clark and Stephanie Rettig in the third doubles match, junior Gabrielle Clark and Annette Sullivan came from behind to defeat Hailey Hogan and Elaine Baik 8-6 at first doubles, to give Emory a 2-1 advantage heading into the singles matches.
Clark also picked up a quick singles point, claiming a 6-0, 6-1 win over Hogan at first singles to build Emory's lead to 3-1. At second singles, freshman Marissa Levine bested Baik 7-6 (2), 6-4, while freshman Bea Rosen earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Herndon at third singles. Emory also received a win from Gordon at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-3 over Clark.
Hopkins players earned victories at fourth and sixth singles, with Lehman besting Wylie 7-5, 6-3, and Rettig defeating Kelly 6-3, 6-2.
After a week off, the Eagles will hit the road for a three-day trip to New England, where the Eagles will face seventh-ranked Middlebury, 10th-ranked Bowdoin, and third-ranked Williams on April 3rd, 4th and 5th.
