The Emory University baseball team came back from a 6-0 deficit,
but the Oglethorpe University bats proved to be too much for the
Eagles, as Emory fell 13-8 on Opening Day at Chappell Park.
After falling behind 6-0 after five innings, the Eagles battled
back to tie the game with a six-run fifth inning. Emory
scored its first two runs during the inning on bases-loaded walks
to Jonathan Reilly and Patrick
Riebsame, scoring Gabe Shivers and
Andrew DeYoung. A Jay Page
groundout scored the Eagles' third run of the inning, and after
Andrew Cohn was hit by a pitch to load the bases,
sophomore Kevin O'Connor drove in two with a
single to pull the Eagles within one. Emory capped off the
inning with a Scott Schwartz pinch hit RBI
sacrifice fly to tie the game.
The deadlock would be short lived, however, as Oglethorpe would
score two more in the sixth to take an 8-6 lead. Emory would
answer back with a run in the sixth on a Reilly single that scored
DeYoung, but Oglethorpe scored five runs in the ninth to cap the
game off.
The Eagles would get a run in the bottom of the ninth and a RBI
double by Cohn, but it would be too little too late for Emory.
Oglethorpe's John Gibbs earned the win with 1.2 innings of relief
work, while Emory's Chris Monaco took the loss
with two runs allowed in two innings. Senior Brian
Cournoyer was Emory's most effective pitcher during the
game, allowing no runs and two hits in two and a third innings.
The loss drops the Eagles to 0-1 on the season, while Oglethorpe
improved to 2-1. The Eagles will be back in action on
Tuesday, hosting Maryville College (Tenn.) at 2:00 PM.
