The Emory University women's tennis team opened the NCAA Individual Championships in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Friday with the Eagles recording a pair of wins on the day and sending their doubles team onto the national quarterfinals.
The doubles tandem of senior Izzy Antanavicius and junior Yanire Marte headlined Emory's first day of competition as the duo defeated Pomona-Pitzer's Leticia Bazua/Lauren Rha in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals where they'll meet WashU's Caitlin Bui and Eleanor Archer.
Antanavicius also competed in the singles portion of the individual championships earlier in the day where she advanced to the Round of 16. She opened the draw with a 6-2, 6-1 verdict over Kenyon's Eleni Lazaridou before falling to the draw's No. 1 seed in Babson's Matia Cristani 1-6, 4-6. She finishes her Emory singles career following a team-leading 23 victories this season and 59 career wins.
Classmate Emily Kantrovitz made her final appearance as an Emory Eagle as well Friday afternoon as she competed in the singles tournament where she fell in the first round to Wesleyan's Agnes Guggenheim, 4-6, 2-6. The defeat puts a cap on Kantrovitz's stellar career as she finishes tied for fifth place all-time in Emory history with 87 career singles wins.
Antanavicius and Marte will look to reach the national semifinals when play gets underway Saturday afternoon, not before 2:00 PM ET.
