The first day of the ITA Indoor National Championships in Nashville, Tennessee ended in a thriller as No. 5 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps upended the No. 3 ranked Emory University women's tennis team, 4-3, in the opening round.
The Eagles started the night on a strong note as Emory claimed wins on all three doubles courts to lead off the match with a 1-0 edge.
Senior Izzy Antanavicius and junior Yanire Marte were the first to finish on court two with a 6-3 result. The Eagles were pushed to tiebreakers on each of the two remaining courts but were able to secure the wins with seniors Emily Kantrovitz and Iris Berman posting the victory on the top court and sophomore Rachel Hernandez and freshman Holyn Karp finishing moments after on court three.
In singles, the Athenas were the first to strike with a straight set decision on court two over Berman 4-6, 1-6 but Hernandez responded with a dominating result on court six, 6-1, 6-2.
Each of the four remaining singles courts went to a decisive third set to declare a winner.
CMS leveled the score at 2-2 as Lindsay Eisenman defeated Kantrovitz 5-7, 6-0, 2-6 at the No. 1 position but Karp put Emory on the brink with her 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 comeback win on court five including erasing a 0-3Â hole in the final set.
The match came down to courts three and four with Antanavicius pitted against Ananya Sriniketh and Marte going against Bell Zhou.
Antanavicius put up a fight in her final set, battling back from a 2-5Â deficit but ultimately fell 5-7, 7-6, 5-7, leading to the decisive match point on court four.
Marte had won her first set 6-4 and held late leads in the second but Zhou was able to pull out a tiebreaker win to force a third set. In the third, Zhou opened with a 3-1 advantage but Marte was able to pull within 4-3 before Zhou won the final two points to seal the win for CMS.
The Eagles will be back on the court tomorrow as they'll face Sewanee in the consolation round starting at 4:00 PM ET/3:00 PM CT at 316 Tennis in Nashville.
