Women's Tennis Perfect on Day One of ITA South Regional

The Emory University women's tennis team opened ITA South Regional play in dominating fashion Friday afternoon, going 15-0 in matches across the main singles and doubles draw as tournament play got underway in Atlanta.

In doubles competition after each of Emory's four doubles tandems received byes in the first round, the Eagles made quick work of their opposition in the second round of the draw.

Both duos of Emily Kantrovitz/Iris Berman and Izzy Antanavicius/Erika Olson posted whitewashings in their respective matches, dropping foes from Centre in 8-0 fashion. Yanire Marte teamed with newcomer Holyn Karp for an 8-1 win while Rachel Hernandez and Audrey Pogue rounded out the slate with an 8-3 decision to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals.

In singles, the Eagles had nine players in the draw with the team combining to go 11-0 across first and second round matches.

Pogue and classmate Jessy Chen were two Eagles that notched a pair of wins on the afternoon with Pogue besting opponents from Asbury and Sewanee by 6-0, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-1 margins while Chen went 6-0, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-1 against foes from Millsaps and Centre.

Seven of the nine Eagles in regional action received opening round byes in the singles draw and went on to standout victories in the second round.

Top-seeded Kantrovitz posted a double bagel, 6-0, 6-0, in her match as did fifth-seeded Olson as well as Hernandez, who came into the draw seeded 10th. Kantrovitz and Olson bettered Centre counterparts whereas Hernandez bested an opponent from Rhodes.

Second-seeded Berman recorded a 6-0, 6-1 result in her match versus Centre while fourth-seeded Marte posted an identical line against Rhodes.

No Eagle dropped more than two games in a single set on the day with Antanavicius and Karp both registering 6-1, 6-1 triumphs to conclude the day one scoring.

The Eagles will look to continue their strong regional play on Saturday when doubles play gets started at 8:00 AM at the WoodPEC courts.
