Spencer Watry Named as Spring Recipient for NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

Emory University men's track & field and cross country standout Spencer Watry was named a recipient of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship announced by the postgraduate selection committee earlier this week.

Watry is the fifth Emory Eagle to earn the honor during the 2024-25 calendar after four men's swimming & diving members were honored back in early May. The award, a $10,000 scholarship, is awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically while also serving as leaders in the community and can be applied toward their current or future graduate degree programs.

The five Emory recipients are the most in a single athletic calendar since the 2017-18 school year and brings the department total to 133 in its history. Watry is the eighth member of the men's track & field program to be bestowed the prestigious honor.

As a team captain, Watry helped shape the cross country and track & field programs during his tenure which culminated with the men's outdoor track & field University Athletic Association championships this past spring. He was a four-time All-American in the distance medley relay and outdoor 800m, a five-time All-UAA finisher including the conference champion in the indoor mile in 2024, a 17-time All-Region selection in track for the DMR, 800m and mile and was an All-Region honoree in cross country as a senior. He currently holds the program record for the indoor mile and DMR and previously held the team record in the indoor and outdoor 800m and outdoor 1500m. He is a two-time CSC Academic All-District honoree and has been recognized academically by the UAA and USTFCCCA.

Away from running, Watry carried a 3.91 grade point average as a Biology major with a minor in Nutrition Science. He was an active volunteer across several organizations including Snack in a Backpack as well as a volunteer in assisted living, extended recovery unit, nursing home caretaker and as an emergency medical technician. Watry also spent time in a research lab that specializes in finding a vaccine for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). He plans to attend Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine as he begins to pursue a career as a doctor.
