The No. 5 ranked Emory women's tennis team (2-0) traveled north to Lexington, Virginia to compete in Washington and Lee's Groundhog Palooza this weekend. The Eagles were pitted against the hosts, the #10 Generals, on Saturday afternoon to kick off the event. Despite dropping the top singles and doubles match, Emory showcased its depth and earned wins elsewhere as the Eagles earned their first ranked win of 2025, winning, 5-2, at the Duchossois Tennis Center on Saturday.
Juniors
Iris Berman and
Izzy Antanavicius got things started for the Eagles on court two of the doubles matches, earning a quick 6-1 win. Sophomore
Yanire Marte teamed up with senior
Eliza McPherron on court three as they took their match, 6-3. Rounding out doubles play were the ITA Cup Runner-ups in junior
Emily Kantrovitz and graduate student
Dakota Fordham. The duo suffered their first dual match loss on Saturday, though, as they fell, 3-6.
Antanavicius kept things moving right along in singles play in the No. 2 position. The junior earned a straight set decision, winning 6-3 and 6-1. After finishing as the ITA South Runner-Up in singles this past fall, she's kept the momentum going and sits at 10-3 overall in singles play.
Berman earned a win on court three, winning the first set with ease at 6-3 but needed a tiebreaker to finish off the second set. Berman pulled out the win in the second set, 7-6 (8-6), to earn the win and improve to 2-0 in dual play and 7-2 overall this season. Marte also won her singles match, her win coming on court four. The sophomore dropped the opening set, 5-7, but stormed back to win the following two, both scored 6-3.
Rounding out the singles wins for the Eagles was freshman
Rachel Hernandez. Hernandez won the first set pretty easily by a score of 6-1 before winning the second 7-5. This is Hernandez's first dual match win in singles play and her third win overall as an Emory Eagle.
Rounding out the singles matches was Kantrovitz on court one, falling in two sets (4-6, 3-6), and McPherron also falling in two sets (3-6, 4-6), on court five.
Emory will conclude its trip to Lexington, Virginia tomorrow afternoon when they take on the #17 Christopher Newport Captains. The match will get started at 12:00 PM at Washington and Lee's Duchossois Tennis Center.
