Under a new regime with first-year head coach Liz Fernandes, the Emory University women's golf team had another banner year during the 2023-24 season.
With a new coaching staff in place, the Eagles did not miss a beat on the greens. The team recorded a win in its first tournament of the year at the Schweizer Invitational with junior Sharon Mun earning individual medalist honors and followed that up with a runner-up finish at the MCC Intercollegiate.
The Eagles posted a pair of top-four finishes in October against the nation's top fields at the NCAA Fall National Preview and Golfweek October Classic before the UAA Championships to close out the fall. Emory advanced to the championship match, its third straight appearance in the conference finals, but fell to Carnegie Mellon in the title match. At the conclusion of the tournament, Mun and junior Heejo Hyun were chosen to the All-Tournament team.
The team returned in the fall with two of their first three tournaments against a primarily Division I field. The stretch also included a trip out west where the Eagles were third out of 10 squads at the Westbrook Invitational.
As the calendar flipped to April and the team had its sights set on the NCAA Championships in a few weeks, the Eagles came through with several key performances down the stretch. Sophomore Katie Park had a record-setting individual performance to help Emory to a runner-up finish at the Stith Invitational. Park was the lone golfer in the field to shoot under par and tied Hyun's two-round total from the MCC Intercollegiate for best score in program history. The following week, the Mun-led Eagles captured the inaugural Deb Jackson Invitational in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
The season concluded in Nicholasville, Kentucky where the Eagles found themselves in search of their second national championship. Emory held the lead at the end of two rounds before it was overtaken by Carnegie Mellon across the final two days. The Eagles registered a four-day total of 1,201 to conclude the tournament.
On the individual side of the leaderboard, junior Ellen Dong battled across the four rounds looking to claim her second individual championship in three seasons. The individual championship came down to the final hole where George Fox's Alison Takamiya edged Dong by one stroke. The two golfers went to a tiebreak to decide the 2022 individual championship.
At the end of the season the Eagles secured numerous accolades, highlighted by Mun's First Team All-America nod as well as Dong and freshman Carys Code earning Honorable Mention All-America status. The trio shared Scholar All-America acclaim along with freshman Derica Chiu.
Furthermore, Mun and Code were two of five Eagles to claim All-Region honors along with Chiu, Hyun and Esther Jung while Coach Fernandes was tabbed as the Southeast Coach of the Year.
In addition, Mun led three All-UAA selections with her third straight First Team appearance while Code and Jung landed on the Association's Second Team.
The Eagles earned the following honors during the 2023-24 season:
