2023-24 Emory Men's Golf Season Recap

Behind a star-studded lineup, including Division III Jack Nicklaus Award winner Jackson Klutznick, the Emory University men's golf team turned in one of its most successful seasons in its history during the 2023-24 campaign.

The Eagles won four tournaments during the season, notably the team's 21st University Athletic Association title, and finished in a tie for third at the NCAA Championships – the best finish ever for an Emory squad at nationals.

The fall season got underway with a statement as the Eagles smashed records at the Gate City Invitational in early September. Klutznick had the first of his many showcases during the tournament, setting program records for best single round and three-round scores, while the team established a new program record for three-round total.

The Eagles added another team win at the start of October, winning the Tartan Invitational with junior Tony Li adding another individual medalist performance for the team. After a fourth place effort at the Golfweek Classic, the Eagles set their sights on the UAA Championships.

Moving to the fall for the first time, Emory claimed another conference championship as the team tied Carnegie Mellon as play was suspended due to darkness. Klutznick and Josh Qian picked up wins for the Eagles while Li tied CMU's Brian Xu through 18 holes and three playoff holes before darkness ended the deciding match. Li and Klutznick secured All-Tournament nods while Klutznick was named the tournament MVP.

Both Eagles were honored at the year-end UAA awards as well with Klutznick becoming the latest Eagle to be named the Association's Player of the Year and joined Michael Burry on the All-UAA First Team. Li was a Second Team recipient. In addition, newcomer Kevin Mu was named the UAA Rookie of the Year whereas Head Coach John Sjoberg and Assistant Coach Keenan Hickton were once more selected as the Coaching Staff of the Year.

The spring slate saw more stellar play out of the Emory lineup as the Eagles claimed a team win at the Discover Dekalb Invitational, a runner-up effort at the Savannah Invitational and was third at The Shoals Intercollegiate.

The season culminated in Boulder City, Nevada where Emory was in search of its first-ever national title. Klutznick shined in the opening round as Emory finished day one one shot back of the top spot on the leaderboard. Klutznick set a new NCAA DIII championship record with his round one total of 64 (-8). He would finish the tournament in a tie for 21st.

The Eagles remained in contention for the rest of the week and would finish the championships in a tie for third place, the best finish in school history. The Eagles established a new program record for a four-round NCAA Championship performance with a four-day total of 1,149. Sophomore Brian Hanson, who was the team's top finisher at 11th overall following a strong effort on days three and four, set a team record with his four-day total of 284.

Klutznick, who was ranked as Division III's top golfer for most of the season, was honored as the recipient of the Jack Nicklaus Award which goes to the best golfer at each of the collegiate divisions. He is the first golfer in Emory history to be chosen for the award. Furthermore, Klutznick became the first golfer in team history to be named to three PING All-America First Teams.

Adding PING All-America recognition were Hanson, Li and Burry who each garnered Honorable Mention status. Klutznick, Burry and Li also were All-Region selections while Sjoberg was a finalist for the Dave Williams National Coach of the Year award.
