The Emory men's tennis team got off to a fast start on the opening day of play on Friday at the USTA/ITA South Regional Championships. The competition is being held in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, with the University of South the host institution.
All 10 of the Emory entries in the Main Singles Draw won their opening two matches en route to landing a spot in the quarterfinals. Senior Rafe Mosetick, the No. 2 seeded player, defeated Michael Tucker of Berry College before topping Briton Richardson of Oglethorpe. Mosetick will meet junior teammate Matthew Erdman in the quarters on Saturday. Erdman moved on after bettering Omar Lopez of Belhaven, 6-1, 6-2, and Mark Sokolov of North Carolina Wesleyan, 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Jonathan Jemison, the No. 3 seed, made an impressive debut, dropping just one game out of 25, rolling by Ben Hadlock of Centre College, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round before posting a 6-1, 6-0, verdict vs. Davis Owen of Sewanee. Jemison's quarterfinal-round foe will be Taylor Bucholz of Methodist. The Eagles' other seeded player in singles, junior Aman Manji, earned a 6-2, 6-0 triumph in his first-round test, and followed that with a 6-0, 6-1, outcome over Rafael Siqueria of Belhaven.
Other Emory players posting two wins in the Main Singles Draw included sophomore Scott Rubinstein, sophomore Alec Josepher, freshman James Spaulding, junior Josh Goodman, sophomore Andrew Harrington, and freshman Adrien Bouchet.
Emory enjoyed considerable success in doubles with four of its five teams advancing to the round of 8. The No. 1 seeded duo of Mosetick and Erdman notched wins over opponents from Berry College and North Carolina Wesleyan on Friday and will meet the Sewanee tandem of Fletcher Kerr and Avery Schober on Saturday. Other Emory tandems competing on Saturday include Rubinstein and David Omsky, Bouchet/Jemison and Manji/Josepher.
