Eagles win Third-Straight at UAA Baseball Championships

Box Score

The Emory University Baseball Team won its third-consecutive game at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, Florida, defeating Brandeis University 10-6 to remain in second place in the conference standings.

Emory is now 14-6 overall, including a 5-1 mark at the UAA Championships, half a game behind first-place Case Western Reserve University (5-0).  After a day off on Friday, the Eagles will face Case for the second and final time during the tournament on Saturday at 2:00 PM.

The Eagles scored first in the game when senior Jared Welch drove in a run with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning.  Emory extended its lead to 3-0 in the third, scoring runs on an RBI fielder's choice from senior Ryan Toscano and an RBI single from senior Josh Bokor.

Brandeis would remain close in the game, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the third off junior Michael Byman, who made his first start of the season in the game.  Freshman Kyle Monk would enter the game in the bottom of the fourth, and pitch a pair of scoreless innings, allowing just one hit en route to earning his first career victory, improving to 1-1.

The Eagles opened the lead further win a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI double from senior Daniel Iturrey.  Emory went on to put four more runs in the top of the sixth, including one on an RBI single from junior Brett Lake, extending his hitting streak to 21 games.

Lake's hitting streak is the fourth-longest in the program's history, trailing only former Eagles Bryan Langbord (29 games in 2004), Frank Pfister (25 games in 2007) and Andrew Cohn (23 games in 2008-09).

Iturrey added a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh, before Brandeis scored a pair in the bottom of the inning.  Senior Jared Kahn pushed the Emory lead to 10-4 with a groundout in the top of the eighth, but Brandeis would score another two in the bottom of the inning, cutting the Eagles' lead to four runs, and bringing the tying run to the plate.  However, senior Mike Bitanga entered the game, inducing a double play to end the inning, and using just four pitches to get through the ninth in order to close the game out.

Emory's victory eliminated Brandeis, now 6-6 overall and 2-4 in conference action, from the UAA Championship.  Washington University (Mo.) at 2-4 and the University of Rochester at 0-5 were both already out of the running for a conference title by the start of the Emory-Brandeis game.
