The No. 8 ranked Emory University women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the UAA Championships on Friday with a 4-1 opening round win over No. 15 Case Western Reserve at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
With the win, the Eagles are set to face No. 2 WashU in the semifinals on Saturday for a spot in the UAA championship match. Saturday's semifinal is scheduled to get underway at 12:30 PM.
The Eagles rebounded for the win after seeing the doubles point go the way of the Spartans to open the match Friday morning. CWRU notched 7-5 and 6-2 decisions on the top two courts to clinch the point. When play was halted, sophomore Rachel Hernandez and freshman Holyn Karp led on court three by a 5-4 mark.
In singles, Emory shifted the tide with straight verdicts on courts one, three and five to move ahead by a 3-1 margin. Senior Iris Berman posted a 6-2, 6-4 line as she moved up to the No. 1 position whereas junior Yanire Marte and Karp both registered 6-3, 6-3 results on courts three and five.
The match clincher came on court two as senior Izzy Antanavicius secured a three-set decision, defeating CWRU's Katalina Wang 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 to close out the match.
When play concluded, Hernandez was on the brink of a win on court four at 6-4, 5-4 while freshman Audrey Pogue was in the midst of a three-setter on six 4-6, 6-1, 2-3.
