The No. 14 ranked Emory University men's tennis team snapped its three-match losing skid on Sunday, securing a 4-3 marathon win over No. 17 Gustavus Adolphus College in the seventh-place match at the Battleground Invitational on the campus of University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Following a pair of 4-1 defeats on Friday, the Eagles bounced back with their second win over the Gusties of the season to improve to 10-8 while GAC slips to 13-9.
Emory had to come from behind in singles on Saturday after the Gusties took the doubles points with a pair of 6-3 wins on courts one and three. When play was halted, senior Dean Kamenev and freshman Matthew Johnstone held a 5-4 lead on court two.
Junior Ryan Nash and freshman Daniel Kim were the first to counter for the Eagles in singles with Nash leveling the score with his 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 5 position with Kim adding a 6-2, 6-3 result on court two.
GAC responded with a pair of straight set decisions against Kamenev (6-2, 6-4) and Alec Anghel (7-6, 6-4) at the No. 1 and No. 6 spots to regain the lead in the match at 3-2.
The two remaining matches on courts three and four went to third sets to decide winners. Freshman Stefan Karatosic posted a 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 line on the No. 4 line to draw the Eagles even before Johnstone came through with the match clincher, going 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to give Emory the win in the tournament finale.
The Eagles will wrap up the regular season next Saturday with a meeting against NAIA foe Georgia Gwinnett prior to the UAA Championships in Florida at the end of the month.
