Sophomores Ruilin Feng and Ajay Kartik represented the Emory University men's tennis team Saturday afternoon in Chattanooga, Tennessee as the NCAA Individual Championships got underway indoors at The McCallie School.
Feng opened the day in singles as he fell in the opening round of the draw in three sets to Amherst's Andreas Sillaste. Feng cruised in the first set with a 6-0 margin but it was Sillaste who took control afterwards as he claimed the final two sets by counts of 6-1 and 6-4 to advance in the tournament. With the defeat, Feng's singles season concluded with a 19-6 overall record.
Later in the afternoon, Feng teamed with Kartik for the opening round of the doubles tournament. The No. 2 seeded Eagles were tested early by Tufts' Alex Ganchev/Sacha Maes as the Jumbos won the tiebreaker 7-5 to grab the early advantage. Emory's tandem though battled back with a 6-2 result in set two before taking the decisive third set, 6-4, to advance.
The Eagles will be one of eight doubles teams remaining on Sunday as Emory will face Trinity (TX) for a spot in the semifinals.
