The No. 3 ranked Emory University women's tennis team began its weekend in Tennessee on a strong note Saturday night, defeating NAIA's Tennessee Wesleyan 5-2 on the campus of the University of the South.
The Eagles showed no sign of letdown following the brief hiatus as the team made quick work of the Bulldogs in doubles, posting a three-match sweep to claim the opening point.
Emory dropped just six games across the three matches with sophomore Rachel Hernandez and freshman Holyn Karp recording a 6-0 shutout on court three with senior Izzy Antanavicius and junior Yanire Marte winning 6-2 on court two. At first doubles, seniors Emily Kantrovitz and Iris Berman were tested but ultimately came away with the 6-4 decision.
In singles, the Eagles secured wins at the No. 2 through No. 5 spots in the lineup to defeat the Bulldogs with Marte and Karp leading the way with straight set wins.
Marte dropped just five games over her 6-1, 6-4 line at the No. 3 spot and on court four, Karp claimed the 7-6 (5), 7-5 result. At No. 2 singles, Antanavicius rallied from one set down to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 and at the No. 5 spot, Hernandez forced a third set tiebreak after falling in the first set 0-6 to win 6-4, 10-8 for the Eagles's win of the evening.
Emory will be back on the courts at Sewanee Sunday morning as the Eagles will battle the host Tigers starting at 11:00 AM ET/10:00 AM CT.
