The University Athletic Association Championships continued Thursday in Chicago with the Emory men's swimming & diving team using its depth to maintain its lead through two days of competition.
At the end of two nights in Chicago, the Eagles hold a 36.5-point lead with 626.5 points. New York University stands in second place with 590 points followed by Chicago with 554.5 points.
Emory saw just one All-UAA performance on night two but were bolstered with 16 individuals securing spots across the finals including eight in A finals over three solo events.
The Eagles' lone All-UAA finish on Thursday came in the 400 Medley Relay as sophomore Zachary Spicer, senior Henri Bonnault, junior McKee Thorsen and junior Hayden Tupper finished third with a time of 3:12.20. The group of junior Colin Zexter, freshmen Griffin Barlow, Carson Kalish and graduate student Jared Zhang added to the Eagles' total with a 10th place showing at 3:15.69.
Thursday's activities got underway with the 200 Freestyle Relay with Emory placing two teams inside the top 11 led by Zhang, Thorsen, Tupper and sophomore Connor McHugh taking fourth at 1:20.17.
Sophomore Ben Pritchard was the Eagles' top individual performer on the night as the second-year placed fourth in the 500 Free as he led a contingent of four Gold caps in the A final, posting a time of 4:28.32. Graduate student Crow Thorsen took fifth at 4:28.72 followed by Barlow in seventh (4:31.39) and freshman Anthony Simmons Jr. in eighth (4:35.22).
The younger Thorsen captured a fifth place finish in the 200 IM to lead six Eagles inside the top 16. Thorsen touched at 1:47.94 while Kalish was seventh at 1:49.10. Senior Sven Becker paced four Eagles in the B final with his consolation win with a time of 1:49.22.
In the final individual event of the evening, McHugh headlined three Eagles inside the top 10 as he finished seventh at 20.30 followed by Zhang in eighth (20.43) and Tupper in 10th (20.51).
The UAA Championships continue Friday with prelims getting started at 10:00 AM CT/11:00 AM ET followed by finals at 5:30 PM CT/6:30 PM ET.
