Emory men's tennis made their 2025-26 debut at the Spartan Fall Invitational in Greensboro, NC this weekend, going 6-3 in their doubles matches and sweeping their singles matches on day one. On day two, the Eagles went 3-3 in their singles matchups against Richmond, 3-4 against Gardner-Webb in singles and split their final doubles matchups 2-2 against Davidson.
The Eagles came out swinging for their first matches back on the court, with the doubles duo of
Victor Sandru and
Daniel Kim taking their match against UNCG 6-4 and
Ryan Nash and
Alex Marino dropping their match 7-5.
Matthew Johnstone and
Caleb Zimmerman took their doubles match 7-5 on day one while
Dean Kamenev and
Ajay Kartik took their match 6-3.
In singles on day one, Emory faced off against Belmont Abbey and put on a show. Kartik took his match in two sets, Kamenev won his tiebreak to take his match and
Ryan Nash dropped the first set but won his tiebreak to win. Sophomore
Joshua Lai, Sandru, Kim and senior Josh Lasanajak all dominated with straight-set wins. Johnstone closed things out for the Eagles on day one, losing a tight first set but battling back to take the second and win the tiebreak.
Emory took on Richmond in singles on day two, taking three of their six matches. Kamenev started things strong for the Eagles, shutting out his opponent in two sets but Kartik followed with a close loss that came down to a tiebreak. Kim put the Eagles back on the board with a strong two-set win and Nash followed that up with a tight match that led to a third set where he ultimately took the win. Zimmerman and sophomore
Alec Anghel dropped the final matches of this matchup, both taking two-set losses to Richardson.
In Emory's second singles matchup of the day against Gardner-Webb, the Eagles began on a rocky start, with Kamenev and Kartik both dropping their matches 2-0 and 1-2 respectively. Johnstone and Nash responded and put Emory on the board, both taking their matches in two sets. Sandru and Zimmerman both followed with tight matches, with Sandru losing in two sets and Zimmerman losing in three.
Lai closed things out strong for the Eagles, taking the final match 8-5
To close out the weekend in Greensboro, the Eagles took on Davidson in doubles, going 2-2. The duo of Kamenev and Kartik came out swinging for Emory, taking their match 6-1. Johnstone and Zimmerman lost their match in a tight 7-5 matchup and the duo of Lasanajak and Lai dropped their match 6-3. Sandru and Nash closed out the tournament strong for the Eagles, winning their final doubles match of the weekend 7-5.
The Eagles will be back on the court in early October for the ITA South Regional in Memphis, TN.
