#4 Men's Golf Opens Play at Capitol City Classic; Hanson Two Strokes off Individual Lead

The No. 4 ranked Emory men's golf team began play at the Capitol City Classic on Monday afternoon, playing in the first round of the event. The weather conditions in Montgomery, Alabama forced the event to be played under a weather delay and shortened from a 54-hole event to just 36, with one round set to be played each day. Despite the windy and wet environment, the Eagles turned in a solid 293 (+5) to find themselves in sixth out of 18 teams. The event is being played at RTJ's Capitol Hill's Senator Course, a Par-72 7,243-yard links-style course.

The hosts of the event, the #9 Huntington Hawks, find themselves in first after an opening round 284 (-4). #2 Washington and Lee is close behind in second after shooting a 287 (-1). #12 Carnegie Mellon and #18 Kenyon are tied for third with a 289 (+1). Four players are in a tie for first on the individual leaderboard after shooting 69 (-3) on Monday.

Junior Brian Hanson led the way for Emory on Monday, carding a dominant 71 (-1). Hanson was two-under over his first 11 holes with nine pars and two birdies. He went on to finish with a team-high 13 pars, 3 birdies, and two bogeys to find himself tied for 7th and two strokes off the individual leader heading into Tuesday's final round.

Sophomore Kevin Mu had an impressive 18 holes as well, finishing at 72 (E). Mu led the team in birdies with five, negating three bogeys and a double bogey. Mu was especially prolific on the Par 3s, being tied for first with the best score of any player at the event, shooting one-under-par on those holes during his round. He enters Tuesday tied for 11th.

Senior Michael Burry finished his opening round with a 74 (+2), rebounding after a rocky start to his round. A stretch of three holes where he recorded a double-bogey then two bogeys in his first few holes saw his score balloon to three-over-par. Yet, he went on to shoot one-under-par over his final 12 holes with two birdies, one bogey, and nine pars to wrap up. He'll enter Tuesday tied for 27th.

Senior Josh Qian had an up-and-down start to his round, alternating between birdies and double bogeys in his first four holes. The remainder of his round was far more consistent, recording 10 pars, one birdie, and three bogeys over his final 14 holes to see him enter Tuesday tied for 42nd.

Senior Tony Li rounded out the lineup for Emory. Li was one of two Eagles to not record a score worse than bogey on a single hole, joining Hanson in doing so. Li finished with a 77 (+5), though, recording seven bogeys in addition to two birdies and nine pars.

Emory enters Tuesday with some work to do, sitting nine strokes off Huntingdon for the lead. The final round will start Tuesday morning at 8:00 AM CST.
