#10 Men’s Tennis Earns Third Win of Weekend, Takes Down #16 Swarthmore, 4-3

The No. 10 ranked Emory men's tennis team (10-4) wrapped up its trip to Fredericksburg, Virginia on Sunday morning, taking on the No. 16 ranked Swarthmore Garnet. The Eagles had picked up a couple of wins already this weekend and were looking to finish an unblemished 3-0 on the trip. Although the Garnet pushed the Eagles to the edge, Emory was able to escape with a 4-3 win and earn their third win of the weekend. The match was played on a neutral site at Mary Washington University.

The Eagles failed to earn the match's doubles point for the second time this weekend, with the Garnet taking two of the three bouts. The strong doubles team of sophomore Christian Liew and freshman Ruilin Feng got the Eagles rolling early, though. The two ran out to a dominant 6-1 victory on court two, marking their ninth-straight win together.

Junior Dean Kamenev and freshman Ajay Kartik slotted in at the top-spot for the Eagles and played to a tiebreaker. Yet, the duo narrowly fell, 6(3)-7. Graduate student Efe Comu and freshman Alec Anghel played in the No. 3 position with their match also coming down to a tiebreaker. Playing together for just the third time this season, the two pushed the Garnet's third doubles tandem, but fell 6(0)-7.

Trailing 1-0 heading into singles for the third-straight day, the Eagles needed to pull off yet another come-from-behind win. Four Eagles, including the top-three in the Emory lineup, went on to win in straight sets, securing another win for Emory.

Kamenev made his season debut in the No. 1 position on Sunday afternoon for the Eagles and earned a convincing win. The junior dominated his opponent, with a final score of 6-3, 6-2 to earn his third win of the weekend. Kamenev is now 7-3 this spring in dual match play.

Feng also finished his weekend 3-0 in singles matches, earning a win on court two. The rookie swept the opening set, 6-0, before finishing off the second set at 6-2 to earn his 10th singles win of the spring. Comu rounded out the top three in the lineup, also earning a two-set win on court three with a final score of 6-4, 6-3.

Kartik earned the other win for Emory, playing on court six. He took down the first set, 6-2, before winning a tight second set, 7-5. The win marked Kartik's third-straight win and brings his dual match record to 6-1.

Playing on court four, Liew narrowly won his opening set, 7-6(3), but dropped the second, 2-6. Liew and his opponent played a tiebreaker to 10, with Liew on the wrong side of a 10-6 final score. Anghel also fell in three sets on court five with a final score of 1-6, 6-2, 4-6.

The win marks Emory's 10th of the season and improve to 6-2 on a neutral site. After over one month away from home, the Eagles will return to the Woodruff P.E. Center this weekend for a match against UC-Santa Cruz. The tilt with the Banana Slugs will start at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 12th.
