The No. 5 ranked Emory men's golf team got its spring break started with a trip to Pinehurst, North Carolina to compete in the Tiger Invitational, hosted by Hampden-Sydney. The Eagles began the two-round tournament on Sunday afternoon, starting with 18 holes at the Forest Creek Golf Club's Par-72 course. After the opening round, the Eagles find themselves in second with a score of 289 (+1).
The Eagles trail #1 Methodist, which holds a commanding eight-stroke lead after shooting a 281 (-7) on Sunday. Trailing Emory in third is Babson, who turned in a 291 (+3) in their opening round.
Emory saw two Eagles shoot under par in their opening round, with senior
Michael Burry and junior
Brian Hanson leading the way. Burry was red-hot to start on Sunday, shooting three under par through 12 holes, with three birdies and nine pars. He finished with tow bogeys and a birdie over his final six holes, bringing his day one total to 70 (-2). Burry will enter the final day tied for 6
th place and four strokes behind Methodist's Chase Walts who leads the field after shooting a 66 (-6) on Sunday.
Hanson struggled out of the gate, bogeying two of his first three holes. Yet, the junior locked in to shoot three under par over the remainder of his round. Hanson finished his round with four birdies and three bogeys to shoot a 71 (-1) to find himself tied for 10
th and five strokes off the lead.
Sophomore
Kevin Mu shot a 73 (+1) in his opening round behind a very strong front nine. Mu recorded a team-high three birdies during his front nine and shot two under par. His back nine did not start the way he would have liked, recording a double bogey to bring him back to an even par. He finished his round with two more bogeys and a birdie to finish just over par and tied for 18
th on the leaderboard.
Also contributing to the Eagles' team score on Sunday was senior
Tony Li, who shot a 75 (+3) in his first round. Li led the Eagles in pars with 13, but recorded four bogeys to go with one birdie in his round. Li enters Monday tied for 33
rd.
Freshman
Zach Pelzar also competed in the Tiger Invitational on Sunday, carding a 78 (+6). His round featured seven bogeys and one birdie as he enters the final round tied for 62
nd.
The final round of the Tiger Invitational will start tomorrow morning, with tee times set to be released later on tonight.
Senior
Josh Qian and sophomore
Brady Lagendyk also made the trip to North Carolina and competed in a separate event as individuals. The two competed in the Hampden-Sydney Invitational at Whispering Pines. The event was played at the Country Club of Whispering Pines' Par-72 course.
Qian shot a 76 (+4) in a round that featured 14 pars. He recorded one birdie and one bogey, but a pair of doubles saw his score balloon to four over par. He finds himself tied for 18
th place and seven strokes off the leader, Justin Luan from Carnegie Mellon who shot a 69 (-3).
Lagendyk also shot a 76 (+4), with his score card being a little more colorful than Qian's. It was an up-and-down day for Lagendyk, recording three birdies, three bogeys, and two double bogeys. He will also enter the final day of the Hampden-Sydney Invitational tied for 18
th.
The event will conclude with 18 holes tomorrow, with tee times to be released later tonight as well.
