For the second consecutive match, the No. 3 ranked Emory University women's tennis team defeated No. 4 ranked Pomona-Pitzer as the Eagles opened their spring break trip Sunday afternoon in Claremont, California.
Last Sunday, the Eagles and Sagehens squared off in the third-place match of the ITA National Indoor Championships with Emory pulling away with the 4-0 win. This afternoon proved to be a tighter match, but the Eagles once again were victorious, toppling PPC by a 4-3 score on their home courts.
In doubles, the No. 2 and 3 spots in the lineup helped seize the opening point of the day as both Emory tandems remained unbeaten this spring. The junior tandem of juniors
Iris Berman and
Izzy Antanavicius won their ninth consecutive match and sixth at the No. 2 spot with a 6-2 result on Sunday. At the third spot, senior
Eliza McPherron and sophomore
Yanire Marte moved to 8-0 together with 6-3 decision.
In singles, the Sagehens put up a fight with three wins at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 spots in the order but wins from junior
Emily Kantrovitz, Marte and graduate student
Dakota Fordham aided in the Eagles collecting their eighth win of the spring.
Kantrovitz and Fordham both bounced back following a 6-4 setback at No. 1 doubles to win in their respective singles matches. Kantrovitz moved to 17-3 this season with her comeback win at No. 1, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 while Fordham won her sixth match to move to 6-4 overall with her 6-2, 6-4 win on court six. Marte was also a three-set winner in her match, rallying from one set down to win 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 position for her 11th win of the season.
