#7 Men’s Tennis Drops Road Match to NAIA Powerhouse Georgia Gwinnett, 6-1

The No. 7 ranked Emory men's tennis team (7-4) made the quick drive to Lawrenceville, Georgia on Thursday to take on in-state foe Georgia Gwinnett College. The Grizzlies have been a powerhouse at the NAIA level, winning 10 consecutive National Championships. Georgia Gwinnett flexed its muscles and showcased its depth on Thursday afternoon, topping the Eagles, 6-1.

Emory saw themselves fall into a quick hole, dropping the doubles point rather quickly. The Eagles managed to pull out a win on court two, though, as freshman Ruilin Feng and sophomore Christian Liew pulled out a 6-4 win. The win marked the tandem's sixth straight victory together.

The Grizzlies managed to salvage the doubles point, as freshman Ajay Kartik and junior Dean Kamenev were dispatched on court one by a score of 6-3 and graduate students Efe Comu and Charley Force dropped on court three by a score of 6-4. With the loss, Emory needed to win four of the six singles matches to leave Lawrenceville with a win.

The Grizzlies' depth was on full display, though, as the Eagles were able to win just one singles match. Force was the Eagles' lone winner, playing in the No. 6 position. Force won in straight sets with a line of 6-4, 6-4.

Kamenev gave his opponent Santiago Villarruel, a two-time NAIA All-American, a run for his money on court two. Villarruel took the first set, 6-3, before Kamenev took the second at the exact same score. The two battled into a third set, but Villarruel's experience shown through as he took the final set, 6-3, to win the match. This snapped a three-match winning streak for Kamenev and brings his dual match record to 7-5 this spring.

Kamenev's match was the only one to reach a third set, with the remainder of the Eagles falling in straight sets. Feng battled on court one with Jeremias Rocco, but was on the wrong side of a 6-4, 6-2 result.

Comu pushed his opponent on court three in the first set, but ultimately fell by a score of 7-5. Comu's opponent made quick work in the second set and he fell, 6-2. Liew played in the No. 4 position, looking to snap a two-match losing streak. Yet, he was on the wrong side of a 6-4, 6-4 decision.

Freshman Alec Anghel looked to continue his winning ways, riding a six-match winning streak into the tilt with the Grizzlies. The run came to an end, though, as Anghel dropped his match on court five by a score of 6-3, 6-3.

The loss marks Emory's third-straight as their record slips to 7-4 this season. The Eagles will have the rest of this weekend off from competition before they head to Fredericksburg, Virginia next week for a triad of matches against ranked opponents. They'll take on #26 NC Wesleyan, #16 Johns Hopkins, and #8 Swarthmore on Mary Washington's campus as they look to get back in the win column. They'll start with NC Wesleyan on Friday, April 4th at 4:00 PM.
