The No. 5 ranked Emory men's golf team concluded play at the Jekyll Island Collegiate on Sunday afternoon, turning in a 286 (-2) in the final round to finish on the podium with a third-place finish. Their three-round total of 860 (-4) saw them finish five strokes off the winner #11 Huntingdon. #1 Washington & Lee rallied for silver after posting a 275 (-13) on Sunday to finish with an 858 (-6). Washington & Lee's Jonathan McEwen won the event after posting a sub-70 score in each of his three rounds, finishing with a 206 (-10). The event was played in Jekyll Island, Georgia at the Jekyll Island Golf Club's Pine Lakes Course, which plays as a 6,700-yard, Par-72.
Four Eagles finished inside of the top 40 in a field of over 150 golfers from some of the nation's top teams. The Eagles also tied for the most birdies of any team at the event, tapping in 53 over the three rounds. The Eagles also had the second-best score of any teams on Par 4s, shooting cumulatively 16-over-par on those holes over the course of the event.
Leading the way was sophomore
Kevin Mu, who turned in a ninth-place finish with a three-round score of 213 (-3). Mu carded a 74 (+2) in his final round, recording three birdies and five bogeys in his final round to record the top-10 finish. Mu's 213 is his career-best in a three-round tournament played at a Par-72 course. He dominated Par 5s over his three days, shooting nine-under-par during the tournament. His second-round score of 68 (-4) was also a career-best on a Par-72.
After shooting a 73 (+1) in each of his opening two rounds, senior
Tony Li recorded a 70 (-2) on Sunday to bring his overall score to 216 (E). His final round was near perfect, recording 14 pars, three birdies, and just one bogey. He was Emory's most efficient golfer on Par 3s, being even on those holes over his three rounds. His score was the best of his spring season, seeing him finish tied for 15
th.
Senior
Josh Qian bounced back on Sunday, carding a 70 (-2) in a round that featured 12 pars, four birdies, and two bogeys. Qian was four-under-par heading into his final four holes but bogeyed the final two to finish off his score, bringing him to 219 (+3). He finished tied for 33
rd on the individual leaderboard.
Also contributing to the score for the Eagles was junior
Brian Hanson, who finished off his tournament with a 72 (E) on Sunday afternoon. Hanson had a rocky start to his round, shooting an 80 (+8) on Friday but rebounded to shoot four-under par over his next two rounds. Hanson was among the tournament's best on the Par 4s, being tied for fourth among all golfers with a cumulative score of two-under-par on those holes. He finished with a 220 (+4) and tied for 38
th.
Senior
Michael Burry finished his tournament shooting a 78 (+6) to bring his three-round score to 230 (+14). He finished tied for 111
th.
A pair of individuals competed in Jekyll Island as well, competing at the Pine Lakes Golf Course's Indian Mound course. Freshman
Zach Pelzar finished his tournament with a 79 (+7) to bring his three-round total to 227 (+11). Among individuals that competed at the Indian Mound Course he finished tied for sixth. Sophomore
Brady Lagendyk shot his best round of his tournament with a 75 (+3). Lagendyk finished with a score of 233 (+17) and tied for 12
th of individuals at the Indian Mound Course.
The Eagle will take a couple of weeks off before heading to Montgomery, Alabama to compete in the Capitol City Classic. The Jekyll Island Collegiate Champions, #11 Huntingdon, will host the 54-hole event which will start on Monday, April 7
th and conclude Tuesday, April 8
th.
