The No. 5 ranked Emory men's golf team continued competition at the Jekyll Island Collegiate on Saturday, playing the second of three rounds at the event. The Eagles entered the day in second-place, but a 285 (-3) on Saturday saw them seize a share for the top spot on the leaderboard with a total team score of 574 (-2) after two rounds. The Eagles lead all teams at the event in birdies with 37. The round was played at Jekyll Island Golf Club's Pine Lakes Course in Jekyll Island, Georgia.
#4 Sewanee is shot a tournament-best 285 (-3) on Saturday, earning a share of the lead with Emory, also sitting at 574 (-2) after two rounds. The Tigers have combined to tap in a tournament-high four eagles at the event, while just one other team has recorded more than one. Huntingdon completes the top three, owning 36-hole total score of 577 (+1). Redlands' Jonas De Leon owns the top spot on the individual leaderboard at 135 (-9).
Sophomore
Kevin Mu had a career day on Saturday, shooting a 68 (-4) in his second round at the event. The score is the best single-round mark on a Par-72 course in Mu's collegiate career. Mu's back nine was impressive, recording five birdies and just one bogey. He got his second half started on the right foot as well, knocking in Emory's only eagle of the tournament on a 528-yard Par-5. Mu stumbled a bit down the stretch, but still finished well under par to find himself right in contention for the individual crown. The sophomore will enter Sunday tied for fourth place with a two-round score of 139 (-5) and four strokes off the leader.
Junior
Brian Hanson was clinical on Saturday afternoon, recording the Eagles' second 68 (-4) of the afternoon. Hanson stumbled to start his tournament, shooting an 80 (+8) in his opening round on Friday. The California native bounced back in a big way, though, climbing 86 spots on the individual leaderboard with his impeccable performance on Saturday. His round consisted of six birdies and just two bogeys to compliment 10 pars. He'll enter Sunday tied for 44
th with a 36-hole total of 148 (+4).
Senior
Tony Li duplicated his performance from Friday, shooting his second 73 (+1) of the event. Li's round was very consistent, recording 11 pars and three birdies to add onto four bogeys. Li's two round total is 146 (+2) as he enters Sunday tied for 25
th.
After leading the way for Emory on Friday, senior
Josh Qian took a step back in his second round and shot an 80 (+8). He recorded a par on seven of his first nine holes, but a bogey and triple bogey left a couple of blemishes on his scorecard. His back nine featured five bogeys and one birdie. Qian's two-day total is now at 149 (+5) as he is tied for 52
nd heading into Sunday.
Senior
Michael Burry struggled on Saturday, carding a 77 (+5). Burry's first six holes gave him trouble, recording two bogeys and a double bogey to see his score balloon to four over par quickly. He was able to shoot just one over par over the final 12 holes to finish. His two-round total is now at 152 (+8) and is tied for 86
th heading to the final round.
The individuals continued play at the Jekyll Golf Club's Indian Mound Course, with freshman
Zach Pelzar and sophomore
Brady Lagendyk representing the Eagles. Pelzar had an up and down round, shooting a 75 (+3) on Saturday. Pelzar was three over par in his opening nine holes but rallied for an even back nine. His two-round total comes to 148 (+4) and is tied for fourth among those competing as individuals. Lagendyk struggled Saturday, shooting an 82 (+10) in a round that included eight bogeys and two double bogeys. He finished with back-to-back birdies to end it off, though, as he heads into Sunday tied for 16
th among those competing at the Indian Mound Course.
The Eagles will have 18 holes to separate from the pack as they get set to play in the third and final round on Sunday. The Eagles will tee off starting in the morning.
