For the second time this weekend, the No. 5 ranked Emory University women's tennis team earned a win over a top three program as the Eagles defeated No. 2 ranked Pomona-Pitzer, 4-0, in the third-place match of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Sunday afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee.
In the first of two consecutive matches scheduled against the Sagehens, Emory came out on top as the match was played to clinch on the final day of the indoor tournament. With the win, the Eagles run their record to 7-1 this spring while PPC drops its second straight to fall to 1-5 overall.
Doubles competition concluded within 30 minutes as the Eagles blitzed the Sagehens to open the day. Emory secured the doubles point with quick ease with juniors Iris Berman and Izzy Antanavicius posting a 6-1 result on court two and senior Eliza McPherron and sophomore Yanire Marte recorded a 6-0 shutout on court three. The Eagles' tandem of junior Emily Kantrovitz and graduate student Dakota Fordham were in front 5-2 on court one at the time of clinch.
In singles play, the Eagles rounded out the win with straight set decisions on courts one, four and five. Kantrovitz notched a 6-2, 6-3 win on the No. 1 line with Marte turning in a 6-1, 6-3 decision on court four. McPherron was the final point as she was a 6-2, 6-1 winner on court five.
At the match's conclusion, Berman was ahead in her match on court three, 6-2, 1-0, as was Fordham at the sixth spot, 6-2, 3-2.
The Eagles and Sagehens will square off once more this week, this time coming in Claremont, California next Sunday, March 9. First serve from Pomona-Pitzer is scheduled for 10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET.
