The No. 5 ranked Emory University women's tennis team took down No. 3 ranked Wesleyan University, 4-3, in the opening round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Friday afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee.
Emory and Wesleyan have had their share of intense matches over the last couple of years and Friday was no different as the match came down to the last couple of points in singles.
Despite the close finish, the afternoon opened with relative ease for the Eagles as they swept all three doubles matches in just 35 minutes to secure the doubles point.
The first win came from the No. 3 position where senior
Eliza McPherron and sophomore
Yanire Marte ended with a 6-1 result. Minutes later, both courts one and two concluded with identical 6-3 results to complete the sweep. Junior

The Cardinals did not go quietly as the match shifted to singles action as Wesleyan secured wins in two of the first three matches to finish to tie the score at 2-2. Marte fell on court four 4-6, 3-6 and freshman
Rachel Hernandez was on the opposite side of a 2-6, 4-6 decision on court six as Wesleyan moved ahead 2-1. McPherron though came through with a straight set win on court five, 6-3, 7-5, to level the score.
With three matches remaining, the Eagles saw clinching points come from the top two positions as Kantrovitz pulled out a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory on court one to set up the match-sealing point on court two minutes later when Antanavicius earned a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 result to give Emory its fourth and final point of the match.Â
The Eagles, now 6-0, will be headed back to the semifinal round with the win where they'll face UAA foe in the University of Chicago at 2:00 PM ET / 1:00 PM CT on Saturday. The No. 1 ranked and top-seeded Maroons defeated host Sewanee, 7-0, on Friday.
