Men's Tennis concluded the second day of ITA Regional competition Saturday afternoon, earning seven wins in the main singles draw and advancing two doubles teams to the championship final.
Starting the day in doubles, the senior/freshman duo of
John Lasanajak and
Daniel Kim took their quarterfinal match 8-3 and their semifinal match 8-4 to advance to Sunday's final. The sophomore/freshman duo of
Ajay Kartik and
Matthew Johnstone also had an impressive showing, winning their quarterfinal match 8-3 and following that with an 8-4 win in their semifinal match to advance and set up the All-Emory doubles championship match.
In singles, sophomore
Ruilin Feng won his round of 16 match, taking his first set in a 7-5 tiebreak and winning the second set 6-2. Feng followed that with another tiebreak win in his quarterfinal match, winning the first set 6-1 and winning the second set tiebreak 7-4. Following him was Kim, who won the first set 6-2, dropped the second set in a tiebreak but rallied back to win the tiebreaker third set 10-6. Johnstone followed him, taking the first set 6-1 and winning the second set in a 7-1 tiebreak of his match. Johnstone and Kim met in the quarterfinal for an Eagle-on-Eagle matchup, with Kim taking the first set after a thrilling 13-11 tiebreak and Johnstone taking set two with him ultimately taking the match in a 10-5 tiebreak to advance to the semifinals. Lasanajak advanced in his round of 16 match via straight sets and won the quarterfinal with a 10-5 tiebreak to advance to the semifinals. Fellow senior
Dean Kamenev rounded out round of 16 matches for the Eagles, winning his match in straight sets to meet Lasanajak in the quarterfinal. In another Eagle-on-Eagle matchup, Kamenev took the win after taking the first set, dropping the second to Lasanajak in a tiebreak to ultimately win the third tiebreak set 10-5 to advance to the semifinals.
In B2 draw, sophomore
Joshua Lai and junior
Ryan Nash dropped their semifinal doubles match 6-8. In singles,
Caleb Zimmerman,
Samuel Neider and
Alec Anghel all took their quarterfinal matches in straight sets. Zimmerman and Nieder met in the semifinals, with Zimmerman taking set one, Nieder taking set two and Nieder closing things out with a 10-8 tiebreak win to move onto the finals. Anghel also won his semifinal match, taking the first set, dropping the second but ultimately winning the tiebreak 10-7 to meet his Eagles teammate in the final.
The ITA South Regional finals will take place on Sunday to conclude the tournament.
