The No. 2 ranked Emory University women's golf team shot a tournament-best 284 (-4) during the final round of the Montgomery Women's Intercollegiate on Monday to overcome a seven-shot deficit and outlast Carnegie Mellon University for the team win.
The Eagles were the lone team to shoot under par during one round at the two-day tournament, finishing with a two-round total of 582, which is the third-lowest two-round total in program history. The team score of 284 on Monday represented the second-best single round in team history. The Tartans entered the clubhouse at 583 following a three-over 291 on Monday while fellow UAA member WashU placed third at 590. Day one leader, Mary Hardin-Baylor, slipped to fourth after a 16-over second round.
Freshman Zimo Li continued her torrid pace to start her Emory career as she led all golfers in the field with a three-under 69 on Monday. Li's two-day total of 140 helped her finish second on the overall leaderboard with her score matching the team record set by Heejo Hyun at last year's MCC Intercollegiate and by Katie Park at the Stith Invitational last Spring. Li was tabbed to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts.
The Eagles had two more golfers finish inside the top 10 with sophomore Esther Jung and senior Sharon Mun tying for ninth at 147. Jung shot under par with a two-under 70 on Monday while Mun shaved three strokes off her first-round score as she carded a 72.
Sophomore Carys Code equaled her day one total at 75 to help her tie for 18th while freshman Covi Yan fired a 73 to help her move up 10 spots to tie for 23rd.
Sophomore Derica Chiu rounded the Emory performers with her 79 on Monday to give her 165 across the two rounds as she placed tied for 53rd as an individual.
The Eagles look to continue their strong start with the Tartan Invitational hosted by Carnegie Mellon in Farmington, PA from October 7-8.
