The No. 3 ranked Emory men's golf team put together a dominant performance in the opening two rounds at the Flower City Preview on Sunday, shooting a 545 (-31) to find themselves atop the leaderboard in a field comprised of some of the nation's top teams. Emory's opening round score of 270 was the second-best single-round score in program history, just two strokes off the program record set last year in the Gate City Invitational. Four out of five Eagles recorded at least one sub-70 round, and none turned in a round worse than 73.
Rounding out the top three are No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan in second with a two-round score of 553 (-23) and No. 1 ranked Methodist who turned in a score of 559 (-17). Junior
Brian Hanson had a historic day as well, becoming just the third Eagle in history to shoot 65 or better in a single round, joining
Jackson Klutznick and Logan Ryan in the elite club. Hanson finished the day as the individual leader with a 132 (-12), giving him a two-stroke cushion. The opening two rounds were played at Midvale Country Club's Par-72 course in Penfield, New York.
Coming off the heels of winning the UAA Tournament's MVP award, Hanson was completely locked in for his opening round. The junior tapped in eight birdies while having just one bogey in the round to finish with his 65. He was just as dominant in the following round, shooting a 67 (-5) to pad his lead on the individual leaderboard. He knocked in eight more birdies but picked up a bogey and a double bogey to inflate his scorecard and bring his two-round total to 132. He'll look to build upon his strong Sunday tomorrow and secure his first career individual event win.
Senior
Michael Burry was red-hot in his opening round as well, shooting a 66 (-6) with one eagle, five birdies, and just one bogey. His second round was a bit more volatile, with six birdies and three bogeys to card a 69 (-3). His two-round total comes to 135 (-9) to find him in fourth place and three strokes behind Hanson.
His classmate,
Tony Li, had an impressive day, turning in a 138 (-6) and sitting tied for ninth place. He was relatively steady during his first round, shooting a 70 (-2) with five birdies and three bogeys. His final round of the day saw him record two eagles, including hole 16, a par-4 that gave opponents some trouble on Sunday. He was the only player in the entire field to eagle the hole. He finished his second round with a 68 (-4) and was the only Eagle to record a better score in the second round than his first.
Another veteran of the program, senior
Josh Qian, finds himself in the top-15 as well. He was impressive in his opening round, recording just two bogeys to five birdies, bringing his score to 69 (-3). He followed that up with another solid round of golf, shooting a 71 (-1) in a round that featured four birdies to go along with one bogey and a double bogey. He enters the final day with a score of 140 (-4) and eight strokes off Hanson.
Rounding out the day for Emory is sophomore
Brady Lagendyk. The sophomore opened his day with a 71 (-1) before shooting a 73 (+1) in the following round. His two-round total comes to 144 (E).
The Eagles will look to finish strong tomorrow as they get set to play in the third and final round. They'll now head to Cobblestone Creek Country Club to play the final round. The event will resume at 7:45 AM with a shotgun start.
