The #2 Emory women's golf team headed south to take part in the Golfweek October Classic, an event that sees some of the nation's top teams meet on the course each year. The Eagles teed off in the first of three rounds on Sunday. The event is being held at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort's Par-72, 5,611-yard course in Destin, Florida.
The Eagles shined on the opening day of the event, turning in a team-score of 293 (+5) to find themselves in second place and just two strokes behind the leader, WashU who shot a 291 (+3). Rounding out the top three are Carnegie Mellon and Carleton College who both shot a 294 (+6) to end the day tied for third.
Once again stealing the show was freshman
Zimo Li, who is off to a dominant start to her rookie season. Li carded the Eagles' lone sub-par round on Sunday, shooting a 70 (-2). She was consistent, tapping in four birdies along with 12 pars. Her four birdies are tied for third most of any competitor at the event. With the 70, she finds herself tied with two others for the individual lead.
Another rookie,
Covi Yan was impressive for the Eagles as well, shooting a 73 (+1) in her opening round. She stumbled out of the gate, recording a double bogey on her second hold of the day. After that, she was nearly perfect with four birdies and just three bogeys to keep herself within striking distance of the lead. Yan will enter day two tied for 13
th place and three strokes off her teammate, Li, for the lead.
Sophomore
Esther Jung also shot a strong 73 (+1). She knocked in three birdies along with four bogeys to finish one over par. She is also tied for 13
th and three strokes off the individual leaders.
Sophomore
Carys Code had the most pars of any Eagle on Sunday, picking up 14 in her round. Yet, a triple bogey on hole seven and a double bogey on hole 18 kept her score well-over par. Code finished her round with a 77 (+5) and tied for 52
nd place on the individual leaderboard.
Senior
Ellen Dong, had a strong start to her day, shooting eight straight pars. However, she went on to bogey six of her final 10 holes to finish with a 77 (+5). She will enter day two also tied for 52
nd and seven strokes off the individual leaders.
Emory will look to leapfrog WashU as they play their second of three rounds at the event tomorrow. The Eagles will get started tomorrow in their second round at 9:25 AM with Dong being the first to take the tee box.
