Emory Women's Basketball Falls At Maryville

Box Score

Sophomore Ashley Oldshue registered team highs with 26 points and eight rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Emory women's basketball team suffered its first setback of the season Saturday afternoon at Maryville College.  The Scots used a strong second-half effort in posting an 85-68 decision over the Eagles, raising their record to 4-2 while Emory dropped to 6-1.

Maryville shot a blistering 65.5 percent (19 of 29) from the field over the final two stanzas in registering a 51-32 scoring advantage over Emory.   For the game, the Scots connected on 48.4 percent (30 of 62) of their field goal tries compared to Emory's 36.2 percent (25 of 69).  Maryville used the trey ball to its advantage, knocking down an opponent season-high 11 three pointers in 27 attempts (40.7%) while Emory converted five-of-19 from distance.

Maryville scored the first nine points of the third quarter, erasing a two-point Emory lead and giving it a 43-36 advantage.  A bucket by Oldshue briefly stemmed the tide, but five unanswered points by MC would stretch its margin to 50-42.  A jumper by senior Shellie Kaniut drew Emory to within six points at 52-46 with 2:28 remaining, but the Scots countered by scoring the frame's final four points, upping their cushion to 56-46.

The fourth quarter saw Oldshue and the Scots' Madison Maples shoulder much of their team's scoring duties.  Oldshue tallied 13 points, sinking four-of-five field goal tries and five free throws in seven opportunities, while Maples accounted for 14 points, draining five of her six floor attempts and all three free throws.  Maples ended the afternoon with a game-high 28 points.

Emory was facing a 10-point deficit early in the fourth but went on an 8-2 spurt, keyed by three-point plays by Oldshue and freshman Allison Chernow, to slice the deficit to 61-57 with 6:23 remaining.   But a three-pointer by MC's Lauren Biliter helped the home team to an 8-0 run, extending its lead to 69-57.  A pair of charity tosses by Oldshue with 4:37 on the clock cut Emory's obstacle to 10 points but that would be as close as it would get for the rest of the game.  Biliter ended the game with 21 points.  Eagle senior Shellie Kaniut was the team's other double-figure scorer with 11 points.

With Oldshue scoring eight points, Emory built a 19-15 advantage after the first quarter.  After a bucket by the Scots' Maples opened the second stanza, the Eagles rattled off a 15-3 blitz, highlighted by a pair of triples by Fran Sweeney and four points from Kaniut, to claim a 34-23 lead with 4:03 left.  However, Maryville responded with an 11-3 run of its own, scoring the final eight points of the quarter courtesy of Biliter, to cut Emory's lead to 36-34 heading into halftime.  Oldshue led the Eagles' scoring effort with 10 points while Sweeney and Kaniut each totaled nine points. Emory shot 42.9 percent (15 of 35) from the floor over the first half while the Scots connected on 33.3 percent (11 of 33). The Scots knocked down seven three pointers in 18 tries compared to Emory's effort of four-of-11.

Emory returns to action on Monday (Dec. 5) when it hosts Agnes Scott in a 6:00 pm start.
