Women's Basketball Drops Rematch Against Carnegie Mellon 73-66

The Emory women's basketball team took on UAA foe Carnegie Mellon Wednesday afternoon seeking revenge from Sunday's road matchup, but the Eagles fell to the Tartans 66-72 at home.
Junior Alexandra Loucopoulos led the team, putting up 24 points and 8 rebounds against the Tartans. Rookie Tatum Olson joined her in double digits with 19 points and two assists on the afternoon while senior Chloe Kreusser led the defense with three steals to tie her season high.

The Tartans started the game hot as they went on a seven-point scoring run in the first few minutes, but junior Caroline Connelly found classmate Mary Mullinax for a three pointer to get the Eagles on the board. The Eagles kept fighting for the lead with a pair of jumpers from Loucopoulos and Kreusser, but a three from CMU's Nicole Timko and a jumper from Payton Baney kept the Tartans in the lead, bringing the score to 12-7. A layup and free throw from senior Lily Kennedy and a turn around jumper from Olson brought the Eagles within two points of the lead, with Loucopoulos getting a driving layup to tie it at 14-14. Despite the efforts from the Eagles, a jumper from the Tartans gave them the two point edge going into the second quarter, with the score at 16-14.

Loucopoulos and Olson got the Eagles in the lead to start the second quarter with a  pair of field goals to make it 18-16, giving the Eagles momentum as a trio of made free throws gave the Eagles the three point edge with 7:34 to go. It was a battle for the lead as Carnegie Mellon tried to tie it up with a jumper and a pair of made free throws, but the Eagles kept fighting as a pair of field goals from Olson brought the score to 25-22. The lead didn't last long as a pair of shots from beyond the arc gave the Tartans the 28-27 lead with 4:06 left in the half. From then on it was the Tartan show as they put up 12 points in the last four minutes to keep the lead, making it 40-32 going into the half.

The third quarter started with CMU on a roll as they scored the first seven points of the half, but the Eagles responded with a pair of three pointers from Mullinax and Loucopoulos to bring the score to 50-38. Another pair of layups from Loucopoulos and Olson brought the Eagles within ten points of the lead, giving the Eagles a good rhythm as free throws from Olson and junior Emma Starr brought the score to 54-45 with 1:49 to go. The Eagles got the final points of the third quarter thanks to a layup from Starr, making it 56-47 going into the final ten minutes.

The Eagles started off hot with a trio of layups from Loucopoulos and Kreusser bringing the Eagles within three points of the lead, but the Tartans responded with a three pointer and a free throw to maintain their lead. Despite efforts from Mullinax and Loucopoulos, the Tartans kept extending their lead, bringing the score to 65-57 with five minutes left. A set of pull up jumpers from Olson and a layup from Loucopoulos kept the Eagles hopes alive, but five made free throws in a row from the Tartans solidified the Eagles' fate, bringing the score to 73-66 to give Carnegie Mellon the win.

The Eagles will close out the regular season at home this Saturday as they take on Rochester and celebrate Senior Day, with the ceremony taking place prior to tip off.
