Women's Basketball Celebrates Senior Day; Shocks Rochester on Last-Second Shot

Junior Alexandra Loucopoulos tallied a career-high 31 points, including all 17 of her second-half points over the final quarter, while senior Lily Kennedy hit a game-winning bucket with 3.4 seconds left in leading the Emory women's basketball team to a thrilling 76-74 Senior Day victory over the University of Rochester.  The win boosted Emory's overall record to 15-10, 5-9 in the University Athletic Association, while the Yellowjackets closed out their campaign at 11-14 overall, 4-10 in league outings.

Luocopoulos dazzled the Woodruff PE Center faithful by connecting on 10-of-19 field goal attempts while knocking down 10-of-11 from the free throw stripe in notching her ninth straight and 15th double-figure scoring performance of the year. Loucopoulos also added team highs with six rebounds and five steals while dishing out three assists and coming up with a pair of blocks. Freshman Tatum Olson rounded out Emory's double-digit scorers with 12 points.

With Rochester holding a 56-54 lead after three quarters of action, the squads waged an intense final 10 minutes that saw a total of six lead changes and six ties. Emory faced a five-point deficit with 1:49 remaining on the clock before a pair of charity tosses by Loucopoulos 11 seconds later cut the gap to three. After getting a defensive stop the Eagles received two more makes from the stripe from Loucopoulos to narrow their deficit to just one point with 1:08 left. The Yellowjackets had a couple of cracks at scoring on their next possession but came up empty with Emory's Chloe Kreusser grabbing a key board on UR's second miss. That set the stage for Loucopoulos to continue her onslaught with her layup boosting the Eagles to a 73-72 lead with 27 ticks on the clock. Kreusser came up with a timely steal shortly after which resulted in her hitting one of two free throws, pushing the Eagles to a 74-72 edge. However, Rochester's Melis Alparslan responded with a bucket, knotting the contest with 13 seconds left.  With time winding down and Loucopoulos with the ball in her hands, she drove the lane before throwing a nifty pass to Kennedy who laid the ball in, snapping the deadlock and giving Emory its ninth win in 13 home outings this year.

For the game, Emory connected on 42.9 percent (27-of-63) from the floor while UR registered a 47.1 percent (32-of-68) effort.  The Eagles drained a season-high tying 18 free throws (most in a league contest) in 23 tries for a solid 78.3 percent compared to the YellowJackets' 72.7 percent (8-of-11). Emory held a slight 38-35 advantage on the glass with freshman Mia Strazza, Olson and junior Caroline Connelly all contributing five boards.

Prior to the game, the Emory recognized Katherine Martini, Kreusser and Kennedy in Senior Day ceremonies recognizing their contributions to the program.

Emory now awaits its fate as far as a berth to the NCAA Tournament when the selections are announced on Monday (Mar. 2) at 2:30 pm on ncaa.com.
