Emory Men's Tennis Defeats North Carolina Wesleyan In NCAA Regional Final -- Advances To Quarterfinals

The No. 4-ranked Emory men's tennis team has advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA D-III Championships following a Sunday victory over North Carolina Wesleyan in the title match of the Lexington, Virginia, Regional, hosted by Washington and Lee University.  The Eagles raised their overall record to 18-6 following a 5-1 triumph over the No. 23-ranked Battling Bishops who finished their season with a 17-6 slate.

Emory took a 2-1 advantage after doubles with the No. 3 team of senior Eric Halpern and freshman Scott Rubinstein providing the Eagles' with the one-point edge in the match thanks to their 9-7 victory over Andres Gomez and Fabio Pereira.

The Eagles' bottom half of the singles lineup came up big with sophomore Josh Goodman, boosting Emory's lead to 3-1 after his 6-3, 6-2, decision against Gomez at No. 5.  Sophomore Aman Manji then came through with a 6-2, 6-2, outcome over Eduardo Ugalde at the No. 6 spot, setting the stage for senior Ian Wagner to close out the match with a 6-3, 6-2, verdict against Fernando Nardelli, raising his record to 19-11 on the year.

Emory will meet No. 5-ranked Washington University (20-5) in the quarterfinals on Monday, May 18. The Championships will be held at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
