Emory Opens UAA Championships with Win over NYU

Box Score

Emory University sophomore Hans Hansen allowed just three hits and struck out eight over six innings, and senior outfielder Brett Lake went three-for-four with three runs batted in to pace the second-ranked Eagles to a 10-0 win over New York University in their opening game of the 2015 University Athletic Association Championship on Sunday afternoon in Sanford, Florida.

The win was the second-straight for the Eagles, who improved to 7-3 overall this season.  NYU, playing in its first-ever UAA contest after restarting the program this year, dropped to 1-3.

Hansen paced the Eagles to the win with the six-inning effort, needing just 88 pitches to earn the win, raising his record to 2-1 on the year.  Seniors Michael Byman and Graham Bloomsmith each pitched scoreless innings to complete the shutout for Emory, its first of the season and first overall since an 8-0 shutout of Huntingdon on April 25th, 2014.

The eight strikeouts marked a new career-high for Hansen.

Emory jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the game, scoring three two-out runs in the first inning, including one each on an RBI double from senior Wes Peacock and an RBI single from sophomore Brian Hernandez.  The Eagles went on to add single runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings, before scoring a pair in the fifth on a two-out, two RBI triple from Lake, pushing the score to 8-0.

NYU's bullpen would hold the Eagles scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, but Emory scored in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk to sophomore Wilson Morgan, followed by a walk-off RBI single from freshman Nick Chambers, increasing the lead to 10-0 and ending the contest early.

Lake added on a double and walk in the game, while also stealing a pair of bases and scoring a run.  He is now batting a team-best .463 and has driven in an Emory-leading 13 runs in 2015.

Peacock finished the day three-for-five at the plate with two RBIs, while sophomore Philip Maldari and senior Jordan Selbach each added two-hit games as well.

Freshman Chase Denison allowed six runs in four innings for NYU, taking the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year.  Michael Vokulich, Jake Smith and David Wagner each had a hit in the game for the Violets.

Emory will be back in action at the UAA Championships on Monday at 2:00 pm, when the Eagles face 16th-ranked Case Western Reserve University in a meeting of the two reigning conference co-champions.
