Emory Softball Batters Covenant College In Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Senior Megan Light continued her torrid hitting, and the pitching tandem of Amanda Kardys and Brittany File posted strong performances Tuesday afternoon in sparking the No. 18 Emory softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Covenant College.  The Eagles ran their win streak to five games and upped their overall record to 33-6 following 9-2 and 9-1 triumphs over the Lady Scots who fell to 11-27.

Light spearheaded the attack, going a combined 7-for-8 at the plate, raising her season hitting mark to .500, and collecting nine RBIs over the two games.  Her totals included a pair of home runs, her school record 13th and 14th of the year, and four doubles which tie her for this year's team lead with Hannah Sendel and Ally Kersthold, while ranking fourth on the program's seasonal ladder.

Light knocked in six runs, scored on three occasions and recorded four hits in as many plate appearances in the opener, helping senior pitcher Amanda Kardys to her 22nd victory in 23 decisions.  Kardys tossed her 12th complete game of the campaign, striking out five while not issuing any walks.  Senior Lauren Gorodetsky hit safely twice and scored a pair of runs to help the offensive attack.  Emory scored three times in its half of the first with two-base hits by senior Claire Bailey and Light driving in runs.  Gorodetsky added to the Eagles' lead the following frame, leading off with a triple and then scoring on a groundout.  Light's first round tripper of the game,  a two-run blast in the fifth, stretched Emory's cushion to 6-0 before Covenant got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.  Light closed out the team's scoring with a two-out three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth that scored Gorodetsky and Bailey.

Light was one of four Eagles to finish with multiple hits in the finale, registering a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with three RBIs.  Kersthold came through with a pair of doubles and scored three runs while junior catcher Micah Scharff contributed a pair of hits and two ribbies. A Light two-bagger in the opening inning, which extended her hitting streak to 15 games, scored Kersthild with the team's first run while RBI singles by Bailey and Scharff highlighted a three-run third.  After CC scored its only run in the fourth, the Eagles responded by crossing the plate twice in the fifth, before closing out the contest in the sixth with a double by sophomore Alyssa Pollard pushing home a pair of runs and a double by Light scoring Pollard.  Freshman pitcher Brittany File raised her record to 9-4 after hurling all six innings and surrendering just two hits and striking out 11.

Emory returns to action on Wednesday (Apr. 8) when it entertains No. 9-ranked Piedmont (35-3) in a doubleheader starting at 2:30 pm.
