Softball Takes Series Opener from Carnegie Mellon, 8-2

The Emory University softball team stayed unbeaten in conference play with an 8-2 win in the series opener against Carnegie Mellon University Friday afternoon at Cooper Field in Atlanta.

Freshman Sydney Thune spun her third complete game of the season while the Emory offense stayed hot, racking up 15 hits for the team's fourth straight outing with 13 or more hits.

The Eagles and Tartans traded runs in the second and third innings with senior Ashley Chu plating Emory's first tally with a RBI single before CMU answered in the visitor's third. The Eagles' big frame came in the third when striking for four runs including a two-run triple by freshman Allie Stevenson to increase the margin to 5-1.

Carnegie Mellon did not scrape another run across against Thune until the fifth when a bases-loaded walk made the score 5-2 but the Eagles responded with two more in their half of the fifth as Shivani Nangia came home on an error prior to Emory capitalizing on another error later in the frame on a double steal attempt by Chu and Shea Johnson which resulted in Emory's seventh run on the contest.

Senior Ella Hoyle padded the Emory lead with the team's final run in the sixth with a single to bring home Addison Kwong.

The lead was plenty of run support for Thune in circle however as the rookie was solid across her seven innings. She allowed two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five Tartans to improve to 4-2 on the year.

The weekend series will conclude Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader getting underway at 12:00 PM in Atlanta.
