Softball Sweeps Friday Doubleheader to Open CWRU Series

The Emory University softball team started its weekend in Cleveland on an excellent note as the Eagles swept Friday's doubleheader over Case Western Reserve by outscoring the Spartans 10-4 at Mather Park.

Game 1: Emory 8, CWRU 3

A pair of run-scoring hits from Addison Kwong and Ella Hoyle got the Eagles started in the top of the first but the Spartans were quick to rally, plating two in the bottom of the first and another run in the second to take a 3-2 lead.

Shivani Nangia picked up an RBI-double in the fourth to level the score prior to junior Lillian Ware breaking the tie an inning later with a single to bring around senior Ashley Chu.

Kwong and Hoyle continued to pad the Eagles' lead in the later innings with Kwong scoring Ellie Zerr with an infield single in the fifth before Hoyle scored two with a double as part of Emory's three-run seventh inning.

Although giving up three runs across her first two frames, freshman Sydney Thune turned in another strong performance in the circle as she worked the distance for a second straight start while racking up seven strikeouts to earn the win in the day's opener.

Game 2: Emory 2, CWRU 1

Emory's Mackenzie Duford and CWRU's combo of Meoli and Alspaw were the standouts in Friday's second contest as the hurlers combined to limit both offenses to a combined three runs on six hits.

The Eagles offense was kept in check with only two hits recorded and Emory only coming around to score in one of its seven trips to the plate. The third inning proved to be the difference with Megan Sutton driving home the game's first run with double to score Rylie Ballog before Chu came home on a Zerr sacrifice fly.

Duford's lone blemish came in the fourth as an unearned run came in to score. Duford worked seven solid innings to win her fifth game of the campaign. She worked around four hits and three walks while striking out two CWRU batters.

The Eagles will go for the series sweep on Saturday with the weekend finale set to get underway at 12:00 PM in Cleveland.
