The Emory Softball team opened conference play in dominant fashion this weekend, completing the 3-0 sweep of Brandeis on the road Saturday as the Eagles plated a combined 28 runs on the day.
Game 1: Emory 15, Brandeis 4 (5 Innings)
The Eagles five-run first inning began as sophomore
Megan Sutton doubled to left center, bringing senior
Ashley Chu home to get Emory on the board. On the next at bat,
Ellie Zerr smoked a two-run homer out to left field, giving the Eagles the 3-0 advantage. Later in the inning, senior
Ella Hoyle joined the party with a double of her own, advancing to third on the throw to bring
Addison Kwong and
Lillian Ware home to make it 5-0.
The Judges responded in their half of the first, plating four runs on three hits to come within one run of the lead.
Emory's momentum continued in the away half of the second as freshman
Zoe Horning advanced to third on an RBI double to bring Zerr in, making it 6-4. Kwong would then help Horning plate a run as she reached first on an error before
Allie Stevenson would do the same to bring Kwong home, giving the Eagles the 8-4 lead to end the second as Brandeis was unable to respond in their half of the second.
The third would go scoreless on both sides before Emory's six-run showing in the top of the fourth. Sutton began a trio of scoring at bats as she garnered the first RBI of the inning, reaching on a bases-loaded fielder's choice to bring Stevenson home. Zerr followed that with an RBI single to help
Shea Johnson plate a run. Horning came to the plate next, hitting a 2 RBI single to score Sutton and Chu. Hoyle added even more insurance for the Eagles with a 2 RBI single of her own to advance Horning and Zerr, giving the Eagles the 14-4 lead.
The Brandeis half of the fourth went scoreless before Zerr would plate her third run of the game in the top of the fifth, bringing the score to 15-4 as Emory run-ruled Brandeis for the second time on the weekend.
Junior
Lexi Bach earned her second win of the season as she spun nearly a complete game from the circle, allowing only five hits and two runs on 74 pitches.
Game 2: Emory 13, Brandeis 10
The Emory bats stayed hot going into the final game of the series as sophomore
Shivani Nangia singled through the right side to bring Chu home in the top of the first.
Brandeis tied it in their half of the opening inning, plating an unearned run to tie it at 1-1 going into the second.
Chu would get an RBI single of her own in the second, bringing Hoyle home to make the score 2-1.
Brandeis would fail to respond in the home half of the second before Emory returned to the plate for a three-run third inning. Hoyle got the scoring started with an RBI single that scored Zerr to make it a 3-1 game before Stevenson's single up the middle scored
Abby Wylie and Nangia to give the Eagles a 5-1 lead.
The game would go scoreless until Emory delivered another three-run inning in the sixth. Zerr batted in two of those runs as her double to center field scored
Radha Samuel and Chu and a sac fly from
Gabriela Oceguera helped Zerr plate the third run of the inning to make it 8-1 to end the first half of the sixth.
Brandeis answered with a lone run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Eagles would make it even more difficult for the Judges as they went on to plate five runs in their half of the seventh.
A bases-loaded single from Zerr gave the Eagles their first run of the seventh before rookie
Makaila Hope delivered a monster triple down the right field line, scoring Zerr,
Marisol Gonzalez and Chu to put the Eagles up by ten runs. Hoyle's RBI single would help Hope plate the fifth run of the inning for the Eagles, bringing the score to 13-2 going into the second half of the seventh.
The Judges comeback campaign came too late as they plated eight runs in the final half inning in an attempt to spoil the sweep for Emory, but the Eagles came out on top as they took down the Judges 13-10 to end the weekend in Waltham.
The Eagles will return home next weekend for their conference home opener as they take on Carnegie Mellon, with game one set for 3:00 p.m. next Friday.
