Box Score 2 The No. 2-ranked Emory softball team maintained its winning ways Friday afternoon, coming away with a sweep of a twinbill against Covenant College. The Eagles boosted their winning streak to 15 games after recording a six-inning 9-0 decision in the opener followed by an 11-0 triumph in five innings.
Sophomore catcher Micah Scharff paced Emory's offensive attack in the first game with three extra-base hits and five RBIs. She smacked a three-run homer, her first round tripper of the campaign, in the top of the first that staked the Eagles to a 3-0 lead. Scharff also came through with a run-producing triple in the fourth and a two-out double in the sixth that scored Ally Kersthold. Kersthold recorded a pair of hits and scored three times while freshman Alyssa Pollard also hit safely twice. Freshman Sydney Carpenter came on in relief in the bottom of the first and picked up her sixth win in as many decisions after tossing six scoreless innings that saw her strike out eight batters.
In the nightcap, junior Megan Light spearheaded the Emory offense, going 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs. Freshmen Katelyn Gibson and Courtney Sugihara each chipped in a pair of hits while juniors Ally Kersthold and Claire Bailey each drove in two runs. Light got the Eagles off to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a two-run double. Emory blew the game wide open the next inning, scoring six more times with Kersthold stroking a two-run double followed later in the frame by a two-run single by Bailey. The Eagles upped their lead to 10-0 with two runs in the fourth, courtesy of a RBI single from Light followed by a double from Gibson that scored Ellyn Kocoloski. Junior pitcher Amanda Kardys tossed all five innings and allowed four hits while striking out four in raising her record to 19-1.
Emory, 34-1 on the year, returns to action next Saturday (Mar. 30) when it travels to Memphis, Tenn., for game against Rhodes College and Fontbonne College.
