Box Score Emory University junior Jared Welch was named the catcher on the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week, following his performance during three games for the Eagles last week.
Welch led all Eagles with a .500 batting average (five-for-10), in addition to a home run, seven runs scored, three runs batted in, six walks and two stolen bases in as many attempts during the week. Welch, who now has a 15-game hitting streak, recorded a slugging percentage of .800 and an on-base percentage of .688 during the week. He went two-for-five with two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base during a 10-5 win over LaGrange College on Wednesday. In a 7-4 win over Oglethorpe University on Saturday, he went two-for-three with a two-run home run, his second of the year, scoring three runs and walking twice. During a 12-6 win over Oglethorpe on Sunday, Welch was one-for-two with a stolen base, two runs scored, an RBI and three walks. He also threw out the only runner who attempted to steal on him during the week, tying the Emory single-season and career records for runners caught stealing.
Welch is .329 this season with a team-high 41 runs scored, in addition to two home runs, 27 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases on 13 attempts, helping the Eagles to a 26-11 overall record.
Welch is the second Emory player to be named to the D3Baseball Team of the Week, joining outfielder Brandon Hannon, who earned the honor for the week of March 12th – 19th.
The Eagles will wrap up their 2012 regular season on Wednesday, May 2nd at North Georgia College and State University at 7:00 PM.
