Box Score The No. 14-ranked Emory women's basketball suffered its first defeat of the season Saturday afternoon as it dropped at road decision at Maryville College. The Scots raised their record to 5-1 following a 62-46 triumph over the Eagles who slipped to 8-1.
Emory ended the contest shooting a season-low 27.1 percent (19-of-70) from the field while Maryville connected at a 42.9 percent (21-of-49 clip). The Scots finished with a slight edge in rebounding, grabbing an opponent season high 42 boards compared to Emory's 40. MC held a decided margin in free throw shooting, hitting 17-of-21 from the stripe while Emory sank two-of-six of its attempts.
Emory junior Savannah Morgan led the Emory scoring attack with 13 points, hitting five-of-10 from field including three-of-five from three-point range. Junior Hannah Lilly and senior Danielle Landry rounded out the team's double-double scorers with 12 points apiece. Junior Selena Castillo led the team's rebounding efforts with a career-high nine caroms while contributing three steals.
With the scored tied at 10-10, Maryville closed out the final 10:56 of the first half on a 21-10 scoring burst that gave it a 31-20 edge at intermission. The Eagles were hampered 26.7 percent field goal shooting during the opening stanza while MC converted 42.3 percent.
A three pointer by Lilly with 13:26 left in the game drew Emory to within nine points with 13:26 left in the game but that was as close as the Eagles would get as the Scots rattled off eight straight points to bolt to a 42-25 bulge with 9:47 on the clock. A bucket by freshman Khadijah Sayyid pulled Emory to within 46-32, but Maryville responded with seven answered points to claim a 53-32 lead with 5:17 remaining.
Emory returns to action on Dec. 29 when it plays host to Piedmont College in a 2:00 p.m. start.
