Box Score Emory junior Hannah Lilly pumped in 18 points to pace five double-figure scorers and the Eagles turned in another suffocating effort on the defensive end of the floor Tuesday evening in coming away with a victory over the University of the South. No. 16-ranked Emory raised its record to 5-0 following a 79-47 decision over the Tigers who slipped to 2-1.
Emory ended the evening shooting 44.3 percent (31-of-70) from the floor including a keen 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from three-point range. The visiting Sewanee squad connected on 35.3 percent (12-of-34) of its field goal opportunities while converting a respectable 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from beyond the arc. The biggest differential in the contest came in the turnover department where the Eagles finished with just 11 miscues compared to Sewanee's 31. Emory rang up with 16 steals which helped in posting a 51-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
Lilly knocked down seven-of-10 from the floor, including four-of-five from distance, in compiling her fourth double-figure scoring effort in as many outings. Junior Savannah Morgan chipped in 14 points that saw her drain four-of-five from three-point range as well as doling out six assists in 22 minutes of action. Senior Katie Dickerson came off the bench and chalked up 11 points while senior Misha Jackson and sophomore O'Dez Oraedu each scored 10 points.
The Eagles were clicking on all cylinders in the first half, hitting 55.9 percent of their field goal attempts and raining down seven treys on the Tigers en route to building a 46-20 lead at the intermission. Lilly accounted for 13 points with Jackson picking up her game total in the first stanza. After Sewanee cut a 17-point deficit to 11 points with 6:57 left on the clock, the Eagles caught fire and finished off the half with an 18-3 barrage, keyed by four straight treys -- two by Morgan and one apiece by Lilly and Dickerson.
Emory kept the pressure on over the final 20 minutes of action and used a an 14-2 burst over a four-minute stretch, capped by a three-pointer by freshman Khadijah Sayyid, that ballooned a 24-point lead to a 36-point bulge, 71-35, with 8:25 remaining. All 12 Emory players who saw action found their way into the scoring and rebounding columns. Jackson topped the club with five boards and three steals.
Emory returns to action on Friday (Nov. 30) when it plays at Birmingham Southern.
