Box Score The sixth-ranked Emory University volleyball team advanced to Saturday's University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship Match with a 3-1 win over Case Western Reserve University in the conference semifinals on Friday at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.
After receiving a first-round bye due to the eighth-seeded team, New York University, opting to forgo the tournament due to the after-effects of Superstorm Sandy, the Eagles were able to defeat Case in four sets, 25-15, 25-22, 20-25, 25-14.
The bye did not hurt the Eagles early on, as Emory claimed a 25-15 win over the Spartans in the first set.
In the second set, Emory jumped out to an 11-9 lead, but Case was able to come away with 10 of the next 11 points, building a 19-12 advantage. However, Emory rallied, winning eight of the following nine points to even the set at 20, and then took command before closing out the frame on a kill by Alex Duhl to win 25-22.
After Case won the third set, 25-20, the Eagles battled back strong with a dominating fourth-and-deciding set, claiming a 25-14 victory to win the match.
Senior Breanah Bourque led all Eagles with 20 kills in the match, while Sydney Miles racked up 49 assists. Taylor Erwin added a 27-dig effort in the contest.
Emory improved to 30-5 on the season with the win, while Case dropped to 24-10 on the year with the loss.
The Eagles will take on top-ranked Washington University (Mo.) for the UAA Title, after the Bears bested the 16th-ranked University of Chicago 3-1 on Friday afternoon. Saturday's Championship Match is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start at the Woodruff P.E. Center in Atlanta, GA.
