No. 3 Emory Women's Tennis Team Blanks Wash U in Semis of UAA Championships -- Will Face Chicago For Conference Crown

The third-ranked Emory University women's tennis team has advanced to the title match of the University Athletic Association Championships following a 6-0 triumph in the semifinals over host and No. 15-ranked Washington University. The victory was the Eagles' third straight and raised their record to 18-4 while the Bears slipped to 14-5.

The shutout was the seventh of the season for the top-seeded Eagles, and their fourth in the last five matches.

Emory opened with a dominant showing in doubles play, dropping just a total of seven games en route to claiming a 3-0 lead.  The No. 1 tandem of Gabrielle Clark and Lorne McManigle got the Eagles off on the right foot with an 8-1 decision over Evelyn Qin and Natalie Tingir, which raised their record to 11-3 this spring.  The duo of Jordan Wylie and Zahra Dawson notched an 8-3 victory at second doubles while Brenna Kelly and Malavik Padmanaabhan were triumphant by a similar count at No. 3.

The Eagles continued their momentum rolling in singles with Dawson's 6-1, 6-0 bettering of Kate Klein at No. 3 extending their lead to 4-0. It was Dawson's fifth consecutive win and upped her record this spring to 16-4. Deciding the match in Emory's favor was McManigle who topped Qin, 6-0, 6-2 at the second singles slot.  Freshman Gabrielle Clark accounted for the team's other point with a 6-1, 6-2 verdict over Tingir at No. 1.

Emory will take on the second seed and No. 4-ranked Maroons of Chicago on Sunday for the title with that match slated for a 10:00 a.m. (EDT) start.  Chicago, 17-2 on the season, earned a spot in the finals following a 5-2 win over Carnegie Mellon in the semifinals.  The two programs met in last year's conference championship with UC prevailing by a 5-3 score.
