Senior Yanire Marte and freshman Devin Gilroy from the Emory University women's tennis team will play for the Division III championship at the ITA Cup after knocking out the draw's No. 1 overall seed Saturday afternoon at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Georgia.
Pitted against WashU's Caitlin Bui and Eleanor Archer, the Eagles tandem dropped the opening set 5-7 before coming back with a vengeance for a 6-1 win in the second to set up the decisive third-set tiebreaker to decide a winner in the national semifinals. Marte/Gilroy continued to ride the second set momentum to defeat the top-seeded Bears 10-7 to clinch a spot in Sunday's championship match.
Marte/Gilroy will look to become the latest Emory team on the women's side to win the ITA Cup Division III crown and will oppose UChicago's Clara Zou/Rosalyn Chan in the title match beginning at 11:00 AM on Sunday.
Elsewhere on Saturday, sophomores Holyn Karp and Audrey Pogue ended their singles runs with Karp defeating Skidmore's Ginevra Muratori in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 while Pogue fell to Wesleyan's Mariia Kornilova 4-6, 1-6 in consolation action.
In the final match of the night, Karp and classmate Visnja Gusavac dropped their final consolation match to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Rebecca Kong/Bell Zhou in straight sets 6-7, 2-6.
