Emory Men's Tennis Defeats Wash U To Capture UAA Championships

The No. 2-ranked Emory men's tennis team nailed down its second straight University Athletic Association Championship this afternoon as it defeated No. 5-ranked Washington University in the title match.  The Eagles of head coach John Browning raised their overall record to 20-3 following a 6-0 decision over the Bears who fell to 14-5. Today's performance marks the 21st time in the past 22 seasons that Emory has claimed the league title.

Emory raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles with the No. 3 team of senior Colin Egan and junior Dillon Pottish setting the tone with an 8-0 win over Gary Parizher and Adam Putterman.  After sophomore Noah Simonson and freshman Ayush Bajoria upped the Eagles' edge to 2-0 with a 9-7 triumph at the No. 2 post, juniors Chris Goodwin and Will Humphreys rounded out that potion of the match with an 8-6 verdict over Isaac Stein and Max Woods at No. 1.  Emory's No. 1 and 3 doubles teams went undefeated over the weekend and now own records of 19-4 and 18-2, respectively, this spring.

Looking to secure two singles points to secure the outcome of the match, Goodwin topped Woods at No. 2, 6-3, 6-2, giving Emory a 4-0 cushion while raising his spring record to 19-3.  Pottish soon followed with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Stein at No. 1 that sealed things. Pottish's performance enabled him to boost his 2010-11 record to 30-2, 23-1 during the spring portion of the schedule.  Coming through with Emory's other point was freshman Simon Lavoie-Perusse who came out on top against Kareem Farah at No. 5.

Today's showdown with Wash U. marked the sixth straight year that the two programs met for the UAA crown.
