The No. 4-ranked Emory men's tennis closed out a
successful performance at the Stag-Hen Invitational on Saturday,
topping No. 3-ranked and host Claremont-Mudd Scripps in the
championship match. The Eagles raised their spring record to
12-2 following a 7-2 triumph over the Stags who slipped to 9-2.
Emory jumped out to a 3-0 lead after claiming all three doubles
points. Senior Colin Egan and junior Dillon Pottish earned the
first win with an 8-1 verdict over Russell Brockett and Mac Cahill
at the No. 3 spot, raising their mark to 11-1 this spring.
The Eagles then saw their No. 1 and 2 doubles teams earn triumphs
in tie-break situations.
Freshman Nick Scczurek boosted Emory's advantage to 4-0 after
coming away with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Cahill at No. 4 singles,
increasing his spring record to 12-1. After CMS chalked up
its first point, winning at the No. 6 singles slot, Egan's
7-6 (4), 6-1, decision over Brockett at No. 3 proved to be the
clinching point. Other Emory wins at singles came from
Pottish over Alex Lane, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-6, at No. 1, raising his
dual record to 14-0, and junior Chris Goodwin at No. 2 where he
bested Alex Johnson in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6, upping his record
to 12-2 this spring.
Emory returns to action on Tuesday (Mar. 15) when it hosts
Denison.
